  • All In the Timing

Most people are familar with this play. It's been a long time, but I believe my brother directed this play. The "shirts" were fun to create. Especially the dirty one which started out as one of my own shirts I photographed and then had the fun of photoshoping in all the stains and dirt... well... I photoshopped in MORE stains and dirt.

  • Almost Maine Poster

Another one of those plays that breaks away from the standard form. This always makes it a bit difficult to find a theme for the poster. I simply went with the core theme and used the visual of the cold and the stories playing out in a specific location.

  • Arsenic and Old Lace

Another classic play most people have seen or at least watched the movie version. For this play I went a little crazy with the concept and decided to play up the ensemble character aspect for the poster. Each character is an original design. I actually used an animation application, Anime Studio, to draw the characters. My brother played the role of Mortimer Brewster in this production.

  • Circle Mirror Transformation Poster

Another strongly character themed poster. Sometimes when struggling for poster theme I just go with the obvious.

  • Dearly Departed Poster

Another character driven poster concept. Also my brother wanted to play around with "taglines" to draw in an audience. They are always under pressure to fill the seats.

  • Deathtrap

During the design process I found online a perfect photo of old handcuffs but couldn't get usage rights. My solution? 3D modeling.

  • Doubt Poster

A somewhat controversial play that was made into a movie not too long after my brother was in this production. My brother portrayed the Father Brendan Flynn character (the role Philip Seymour Hoffman played in the movie). I saw both this play and the movie. I won't say which was better, but live theater is always more exciting in my opinion.

  • Enchanted April Poster

I Really like this poster. It is definitely one of my personal favorites. I put a lot of effort into this one. There was a bit of a disagreement about the layout at the end of the deign process and I was asked to "start over" with a new concept. Luckily this was avoided... phew! I get nervous when things like that happen.

  • Harvey Painting

My brother thought this would be too much work for me (these plays have almost ZERO budget for things like posters and props of this sort) but I insisted on doing it as I thought it would so much fun. Having done digital artwork for years I hadn't touched a paint brush in a very long time and was excited to get back into it.

I was very happy with the final results. My brother had it framed and it was hanging in his house the last time I saw it. The same painting was used for a later production of Harvey he was involved with. I do however, wish that I had painted it MUCH larger. It was a very large painting when you are standing next to it, but when it was used on stage I wish it could have been much larger

  • Harvey Poster

    Harvey Painting

My first Harvey poster. My brother had the lead role and I also painted the portrait of him with the big rabbit Harvey that was used in the play.

  • Kimberly Akimbo Poster

A very strange but straight forward plot, that made chosing the poster theme fairly straight forward. I really enjoyed creating this illustration. The was the first poster I did using a Wacom Intuous drawing tablet.

  • Kiss the Moon Kiss the Sun Poster

This is the most recent poster. The play is set to premier in August of 2014. It went through a few revisions. I may have not quite read the synopsis carefully enough and had to modify the interaction of the moon and sun.

  • Last Night Of Ballyhoo Poster

One of my earlier posters. This was a really tough one because the story and themes of the play didn't conjur up a bold concept for a poster. As part of this play I also created a "fake" newspaper front page that was printed and used as a prop.

  • Life X 3 Poster

Another tricky one to come up with a good poster concept. I often will do searches on the web for posters of the play I am working on at the time. I don't do this to "steal" ideas but often to AVOID stealing the idea so I can try to do something that hasn't been thought of for a particular play. In this case, there appeared to be as many different interpretations of the plays themes as different productions of it. I finally chose some simple visual concepts and a basic text layout.

  • Love Song Poster

I really enjoyed this project. I don't often see these plays because Harrisonburg VA is a bit of a trip for me, but I did see this one and enjoyed it very much. This poster was the second one I did using my Wacom Intuous drawing tablet.

  • Messiah On The Frigidaire Poster

This was a very interesting concept for a play. An image of jesus appears on an old refrigerator. The main issue I had to deal with was the messiah image that would be used on the poster. I was instructed not to make it too "visible". It had to be very subtle so as not to offend the religious community. I think I pulled it off effectively and the halo helped get the point across.

  • Mornings at Seven Poster

A claassic play that is popular with commmunity theater. Not one of my favorite posters. I struggled with a good concept. There were too many characters to try and create them all so I went with the divided house conept and simplistic representation of the family portrayed in the play.

  • The Blue Hotel Poster

This was an exciting project to work on. I had been doing posters exclusively for my brother's plays but the director of The Blue Hotel who also adapted the play from Stephan Crane's book, specifically asked me to do the poster.

The play's setting is the "old west", and there was also going to be live pre show music in that style that they wanted to promote on the poster. I decided to go with an old "newspaper" style and create a poster that would feel as if it was printed in the same time period of the play itself. I was given a large framed copy of the poster for my hard work.

  • The End of The World As We Know It Poster

This was a very exciting and important project to work on. This was an original play written and directed by my brother Jay Zehr. My brother also had a small acting role in the play. It has all the elements I wish more plays had; the end of the world and aliens. I just don't think there are enough aliens in stage productions.

  • The Mineola Twins Poster

This is another one of my favorite posters. I like it because of its bold simplicity and that it portrays the theme and personalities of the main characters with out requiring a lot of detail.

  • The Nerd Poster

As a nerd myself, I thought this would be an easy one to do. It had a lot of characters and interesting plot lines, but ultimately due to time and scheduling and some ideas about "marketing" we decided to go with a simple typography based design.

  • The Odd Couple

Most people are familar with this play. It's been a long time, but I believe my brother directed this play. The "shirts" were fun to create. Especially the dirty one which started out as one of my own shirts I photographed and then had the fun of photoshoping in all the stains and dirt... well... I photoshopped in MORE stains and dirt.

  • Three Viewings Poster

Another difficult play to get my head around for the poster. Eventually I went with a simple design with a few simple elements.
